Whether you are in a relationship that is a friendship, boyfriend or girlfriend, promised, engaged, or married; whatever stage we are in, we must have Jesus above it, at the center of it, and over it. Jesus has to be the top priority in any relationship. So, imagine a chart, God (The Father), Jesus (The Son), The Holy Spirit, The Word of God, your partner, yourself, and everything else after that.
Have you ever heard The Word in 2 Corinthians 6:14 preached by your pastor, or your parents giving you an ultimatum on it? Even as an adult if we meet someone we really like, but they are not a believer, we must be careful. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 NLT it states, “14 Don’t team up with those that are unbelievers (unequally yoked). How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?”
You see, Jesus warns us for a reason. Let’s say you are at a social event for school or work, and while at the social gathering you meet someone of the opposite sex and are immediately attracted to them. You exchange numbers, and weeks later, you begin dating. Now, you are a believer in Jesus Christ, and the other person is not. You go to church, and the other does not. You read in your Bible, you do devotionals, you pray, you spend intimate time alone with Jesus, but the other does not. You listen to Worship music, but every time you ride together, the unbeliever changes the music to secular. In the beginning you go along with them, but pray for Jesus to intervene with their hearts because, after all, you were brought into one another’s lives for a reason, right? How can you be so sure? By prayer and supplication, correct? God is not going to give us Scripture as a guide for our lives and then contradict what He says in the same chapter of our lives! We must be diligent and receptive to His Word!
Months later, you are in the same relationship. You’ve noticed you spend less time with your Bible because instead of waking up and starting your day with Jesus, you wake up to the “good morning” texts, a smile bigger than Texas enters your face, and you instantly call or text back. Now he or she responds back, and the next thing you know is, your Bible has been replaced by your other person. As most new relationships begin, you want to spend every waking second with this person, so you are now preoccupied with your significant other.
Dates are made, good mornings are made, time spent after school, college, or work is spent, weekends are spent, your music slowly starts to change, Sundays are harder to make because Saturday night was SOOOOOO good neither of you wanted it to end, so you stayed out entirely too late. It’s just one Sunday, I can sleep in, right?
See what is slowly, but rapidly happening right before your very eyes, but you can’t seem to see it because the enemy has you blind sighted. However, you need to WAKE UP!! You are being deceived by the enemy! He has you so distracted by this “new love” that you’re giving up your time with The One that created you for fleshy desires. Do you know that is exactly what the enemy wants?! Remember: What does John 10:10 say? The enemy comes to steal and kill and destroy….
Satan will do any and everything he can to deceive, distract and devour to pull you away from the perfect goodness of God. This is the very reason why we are not to be unequally yoked! It is all there. Our instructions for our lives. God gave it to us. All we have to do is just pick up the Bible, read it, learn it, study it, and apply it!
God gave us His only Son to die for us, so we could live a life of righteousness. Jesus didn’t die so you could go out into the world and sin, sin again, and again. He died for you because He loves you! We are not here on this earth for our own worldly desires. We are here for a purpose. His purpose! We are here to bring the lost to Him, to glorify Him, to make Heaven crowded, not make hell bigger!
Relationships with friends, significant others, colleagues etc. are to be approached with the discernment that God gives us. Choose them wisely! You can love someone that is not Godly but love them from a praying distance. The enemy is sneaky, that’s why he came to Eve as a serpent in The Garden of Eden. He deceived her with a vision, to make her see what "God see's." He will do anything, build wedges, separate us any way he can from the love of our Father.
“How will I meet someone that God has designed for me in today’s society?” Through God! When we diligently pray, meditate and study in God’s Word, become one with Him, have that alone and intimate time with Him, seek Him (even before we seek ourselves) above all else, study Him, allow Him to be filled within us, and we prepare our hearts, and fix our desires to meet those he intends us to have, then we will know they are for us. God will show you!
Don’t allow your hearts to become tempted or distracted. Pray together, worship together, tell the enemy to flee from you and your relationship's. Spend so much time wrapped up in God, that God has all the cracks closed, so the enemy can’t slip in and attack!
Also, remember what Jesus warns us about in the Bible; a wolf in sheep's clothing. If a man or woman's actions do not align with what they are saying, then you know that relationship is not of God. Satan loves to slip in and distract you. He knows what your heart desires, and he will make you feel like that man or woman hung the moon, knowing they are lying and deceiving you the whole time. The enemy knows exactly what to do, and how to make you fall for his schemes. Be sharp! Be aware! Ask God if this relationship is for you! Listen to the Holy Sprit that resides within you.
Proverbs 4:20-27 NLT
20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to My Words. 21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, 22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. 23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. 24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. 25 Look straight ahead and fix your eyes on what lies before you. 26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. 27 Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
The Temple of the Living God
14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temples and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be My people. 17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. 18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty."
I truly hope you enjoyed God’s message from me to you today.
